Question 1

What is forestry mulching?

Accepted Answer

Forestry mulching is a land clearing method that uses a specialized machine with a rotating drum of steel teeth to grind trees, brush, and vegetation into large mulch that stays on-site. Unlike traditional clearing that requires cutting, piling, and hauling debris, forestry mulching processes everything in place — no burn piles, no hauling, no cleanup. The mulch left behind naturally decomposes and helps prevent erosion.

Question 2

What size trees can a forestry mulcher handle?

Accepted Answer

We regularly handle trees up to about 6 inches in diameter. We can take on larger trees — up to around 8 inches — but it takes more time and affects the job cost. If a tree is too large for us to bring down safely, we recommend having a tree service fell it first, then we’ll mulch the remaining brush and growth.

Question 3

How much does forestry mulching cost?

Accepted Answer

Forestry mulching pricing depends on acreage, terrain, and brush density. Most residential jobs fall in the $1,500–$7,000 range depending on the scope of work. A small half-acre lot with light brush will be on the lower end, while several acres of heavy growth will cost more. Request a free on-site estimate and we'll walk the property with you and give you a fixed price before any work begins.

Question 4

What happens to the debris after forestry mulching?

Accepted Answer

Everything is processed on-site and left as a layer of large wood chips and shredded material. The depth varies — thicker around stumps and trees, thinner in open areas. This mulch breaks down naturally over time, returns nutrients to the soil, and helps prevent erosion. Softwoods decompose faster; hardwoods like oak and hickory take longer. No hauling, burning, or off-site cleanup is needed.

Question 5

How long does forestry mulching take?

Accepted Answer

Most residential land clearing jobs are completed in 1–3 days, depending on the size, density, and terrain of the area being cleared. Larger properties or heavier brush will take longer. We’ll give you a time estimate along with your quote so you know what to expect.

Question 6

Do you offer free land clearing estimates?

Accepted Answer

Yes! We’ll come to your property, walk the area with you, discuss your goals for the land, and provide a written quote at no charge. This helps us give you an accurate price and ensures we understand exactly what you need.

Question 7

Can forestry mulching remove honeysuckle and invasive species in Ohio?

Accepted Answer

Yes — invasive species removal is one of the most common reasons Central Ohio property owners call us. Amur honeysuckle, multiflora rose, autumn olive, and callery pear (Bradford pear) have taken over woodlands and fence lines across Knox, Licking, and Delaware counties. Our forestry mulcher grinds these plants down to the root crown, which is far more effective than cutting alone since many invasive species resprout aggressively from stumps. Ohio banned the sale of callery pear trees in 2023 due to how invasive they’ve become — if you have wild-growing pear thickets on your property, mulching is the most efficient removal method.

Question 8

Can you rent a forestry mulcher?

Accepted Answer

You can, but it’s worth knowing what you’re getting into. Renting a skid steer with a forestry mulcher head typically runs $1,500–$2,500 per day, plus delivery if you can’t haul the machine yourself. The learning curve is real — an inexperienced operator will move much slower and risks damaging the teeth on hidden rocks. For most homeowners, hiring a professional gets the job done faster, but renting can make sense for small, straightforward jobs if you have experience operating heavy equipment.

Question 9

Is forestry mulching better than burning for land clearing?

Accepted Answer

For most Central Ohio property owners, yes. Open burning in Ohio is restricted during certain months and hours under Ohio Revised Code 1503.18, and many townships have additional burn ordinances. Beyond the regulations, burning leaves bare soil exposed to erosion, produces smoke that affects neighbors, and many invasive species like honeysuckle and autumn olive resprout more vigorously after fire. Forestry mulching leaves a protective mulch layer that helps prevent erosion and returns nutrients to the soil — no smoke, no fire risk.

Question 10

Can forestry mulching help with hunting land management?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely. Many Knox County and Licking County landowners use forestry mulching to improve their hunting property. We can create food plot openings in wooded areas, clear shooting lanes, and establish edge habitat — the transition zones between forest and open areas that white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and other game species prefer. Selectively removing invasive understory also promotes native browse plants and allows oak, hickory, and other mast-producing trees to regenerate, improving long-term habitat quality.

Question 11

Do I need a permit for land clearing in Ohio?

Accepted Answer

For typical residential and agricultural land clearing on private property in Ohio, no permit is required. If your property contains wetlands or streams, there may be additional considerations. If you’re unsure, we can discuss what applies to your property during your free estimate.

Question 12

What’s the difference between forestry mulching and bush hogging?

Accepted Answer

They’re designed for very different jobs. A bush hog is a rotary mower for tall grass, weeds, and light brush in open fields — think pasture maintenance. A forestry mulcher is a heavy-duty grinding head that processes trees, dense brush, saplings, and invasive species, turning everything into large mulch on the spot. A good rule of thumb: if it’s mostly grass and weeds, a bush hog will do the job. If it’s woody or dense, you need a forestry mulcher.

Question 13

Can you mulch around trees I want to keep?

Accepted Answer

Yes — selective clearing is a big part of what we do. Our equipment is maneuverable enough to work around trees you want to preserve while removing the surrounding brush, invasive species, and understory. This is common on wooded properties where landowners want to keep mature oaks, maples, or other desirable trees but clear out the honeysuckle, multiflora rose, and scrubby growth underneath. The more clearly you mark what stays, the better — flagging tape or a walkthrough before we start helps us protect your desirable trees.

Question 14

What’s the best way to clear thick brush?

Accepted Answer

For anything heavier than tall grass and weeds, forestry mulching is the most efficient option. Bush hogging works on open fields with light growth, but it’s not built for saplings or woody brush. Chainsaws and brush cutters work on small areas but are slow, labor-intensive, and leave you with piles of debris. Bulldozing removes everything including your topsoil. A forestry mulcher handles thick brush, saplings, small trees, and invasive species like honeysuckle — and leaves large mulch on the ground instead of debris piles. No hauling, no burn piles, and your soil stays intact.

Question 15

Does forestry mulching damage soil?

Accepted Answer

No — it’s one of the most soil-friendly clearing methods available. The mulch layer left behind acts as a natural erosion barrier, which matters on the rolling, hilly terrain common in Knox County and eastern parts of our service area. As the mulch decomposes, it returns organic matter and nutrients to the soil. Compare this to bulldozer clearing, which strips topsoil and compacts the ground, or burning, which can sterilize the top layer of soil. Our tracked equipment also distributes weight to reduce soil compaction compared to wheeled machines.
